Dwarf Bash - Not!

The Dwarfs of the Grey Mountain Collective again faced the human Empire on the field of battle. Both armies fielding 703 points exactly.

The Dwarf army consisted of four brigades. The first was a Heavy brigade, consisting of two bases of elite EHI CO infantry, a SO base of Grenadiers and a piece of medium artillery. Next was a medium brigade of three CO HI infantry bases and a piece of medium artillery. Finally, two light brigades, each with two OO HI Crossbows and two OO LI Socialist Miners Militia. Further support was provided by three heroes who were to play a crucial role in battle. Most noticable of these was Mad Kamare Grimhelm the Bat dwarf. He is a dwarven superhero operating a batwinged flying machine (Superhero, strength nine while flying; rather more ordinary Hero strength three if grounded). Magic support was in the form of three artillery spotters using Fire magic and a hero and general with Void magic.

Facing the dwarfs across the field was the human Empire run by some rather bureaucratic magistrates. The humans fielded five brigades: a brigade of three CO EHC knights; an infantry brigade with two bases of CO HI pikes and two bases of CO HI crossbows; a brigade of three batteries of medium artillery; a brigade of levy infantry; and a brigade of two bases of Eagles (OO Flying HC). Magic was four Fire magicians and two with Water magic.

The dwarfs deployed with a light brigade in medium works on the left flank, the medium and heavy brigade in the centre, and another light brigade on the right flank in some woods. The humans faced with the knights on the left, the infantry and artillery in the centre and the levy infantry and the eagles on the right. After much taunting by the dwarfs the humans finally decided that a very specific description of their female ancestors was too much and they advanced in order to take their revenge.

Empire Knights

The advance started on the flanks with the Knights going for the redoubt and the levy and flyers going for the woods. The human centre advanced more slowly in order to protect both the flanking attacks.

The eagles attacked the bases in the woods and in quick order started two of them routing. In the following pursuit one of the bases of eagles was charged in the rear by Mad Kamare Grimhelm the Bat Dwarf. This caused the budgies to leave the battlefield with tattered bits of tail between their talons. The other eagle base was kept on the ground fighting one of the other heroes and subsequently charged in the flank by several bases of of the dwarves. Tragically this openend up the flanks and the brigade was finally destroyed by the levies. However they had done sterling work in keeping the flyers out of the rest of the battle.

Because the humans did not bring their artillery, the dwarf Heavy and Medium brigade could advance to meet them and at the same time provide support for the light brigade in the redoubt. The centre and the left flank came in to contact almost at the same time. The redoubt was attacked frontally by one of the knights while another base tried to  outflank it on the left at the same time. Dwarven hero Laro Doomaxe held up the flanking knights while a base of crossbows braced by the miners dealt with the frontal assault. Brave Laro paid with his life but he saved the day allowing the crossbows just enough time to beat of the frontal assault and face the threat on their flank. The third base of knights meanwhile met its match in the medium brigade and some more crossbows from the redoubt.

The final blow to the humans came when they came into contact with the heavy brigade. The EHI of the 1st Shock regiment rocked their world and they ran for it. This left the centre of the human army severely compromised with dwarven heavy and extra heavy infantry on their front and flanks. One of the battalions of the 1st Shock regiment was even poised to take their sacred standard. The humans decided to give up and asked for a cessation of the hostilities which was gracefully granted by the dwarves. After all what is the use of a giant golden statue of a rubber stamp?

Empire Sacred Standard

At the suspension of the battle, the humans had lost two bases of knights, one flyer base, and one pike base. The remaining flyers and Knights were severely damaged. The dwarf casualties were higher, two heroes and five bases, but they had won the day.

The first big solo win of the Grey Mountain Collective. Yeah!

Notes:

1)  Flyers are very scary. Having some of your own is crucial if the enemy has more then one base of the buggers.

2)  Medium Works are quite useful against cavalry. I doubt my opponent will try this ever again!

3)  Heroes rock.

4)  Fire magic is your friend. Several tight fights were decided by the use of fire magic. Save it for the crucial fights.

No Winners

Last Saturday I played a game of Vis Magica with my Dwarves versus the Orcs and Goblins of Maarten Kaiser. Armies were 550 points a side.

The Dwarven Grey Mountain Collective fielded an army of four brigades: two brigades of heavy infantry supported by artillery, and two light brigades with crossbows and light infantry Miners Militia.

Facing them was a seemingly disorganised rabble consisting of various orc and goblin bases. Most prominent amongst these were two bases of large trolls and a brigade of cavalry mounted on wolves. The trolls are light giants and because of their immense stupidity they are also classed as Undead. There were no flyers in either army: yeah!

The dwarves deployed in a tight formation with the heavy brigades side by side in the centre. The left flank anchored on a wood and marsh with the weaker of the light brigades. The right flank somewhat hanging in the air with the other light brigade. About two moves to the front of this flank there were two woods with a open passage between them. An ideal place to ambush some cavalry.

The orcs deployed in a solid phalanx of three lines of bases, with the trolls in the second line. The front line consisted mostly of light skirmishers. The Orc cavalry faced the right flank of the dwarves and planned to go between the two woods…they are falling into the trap.

Battle starts with the dwarves moving their light brigade towards the woods and the orcs advancing all along their line. The Dwarven commander, not familiar with wolfriders, miscalculated and the first two bases of the light brigade are threatened in their flank by the wolfriders. They save themselves from the first charge by evading. Sadly this works only once as the wolfriders are somewhat faster then the dwarves on foot. The rest of the brigade tries to withdraw but quickly suffers a similar fate. In their rout they are forced through the centre disorganising the lot. A brutal fight for survival starts in the centre between the dwarven heavies and various orc bases and one of the bases of trolls.

The left flank of dwarves does better. The artillery and crossbows quickly strip away the line of protecting skirmishers. After that the artillery concentrates on the trolls while the crossbows destroy a few other bases. The trolls are annihilated by the artillery leaving the left facing a very much lighter threat.

The fight in the centre is long and hard and swings either way several times until it is finally decided by the untimely death of one of the dwarven leaders. Meanwhile the orc left has been annihilated and the right is collapsing as well: a very lucky and timely die role of double six by a dwarven base facing successive charges by orc wolfriders means the first one is routed and the second is stopped in its tracks.

Exhausted, both armies decide to call it a day and withdraw. Both commanders happy to have a bit of their army to bring home.

Overall a very good and interesting game. All the problems in the dwarven army my own doing this time. No flyers to blame. It remains difficult to recover from problems with a dwarven army. The very small frontage and tight deployment you need to survive also means that a rout disorganises several other bases. But once they get into contact they remain tough little buggers who can take a lot punishment. Other conclusion, undead trolls are not to be taken lightly.
